Saifeena's wedding

Saifeena's wedding

Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan signed the marriage registry yesterday afternoon and sealed it with an exchange of vows at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai. The bride wore a traditional gharara belonging to her mother-in-law and made up-to-date for the occasion. She later changed into a champagne outfit by Manish Malhotra. The groom wore a brocade achkan by designer Raghavendra Rathore.

Close friend and designer Manish Malhotra and his team helped Kareena get ready for her big night. Yesterday afternoon, he tweeted: "So me and my team is here to get kareena dress as a bride."

"First we style and fit the vintage traditional outfit on kareena".

"After the vows for the wedding party change into outfit made by me"

The reception was a grander affair than the previous, more private, functions. Guests included Shah Rukh Khan and wife Gauri, industrialist Ratan Tata and cousin Ranbir Kapoor. Friends like Amrita Arora, Malaika Arora Khan and Manish Malhotra have been at most of the functions so far.

The registered marriage took place at Saif's Bandra apartment this afternoon with his mother Sharmila Tagore and Kareena's parents Randhir and Babita Kapoor acting as witnesses.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan was late to the ceremony because he was appearing an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati. He tweeted later: Saif & Kareena dinner rushed after finishing kbc. Wot a lovely couple...wish them only happiness. Thanx for the warmth, lov & dancing.

SRK was also among the first to wish the newlyweds, tweeting earlier in the day: Happiest marriage bond to my friend Saif & Kareena. May Allah keep ur family healthy & happy. Just saw it is registered, sealed & delivered.

Kareena's ex-boyfriend Shahid Kapoor also wished the couple luck and said that he hoped Kareena would keep acting after her marriage.

Kareena, 32, and Saif, 42, have been dating for the last five years. Saif was previously married to actress Amrita Singh with whom he has a daughter and a son. Wedding celebrations, including the sangeet and mehendi, have been kept private, restricted to a small number of family and close friends only. But the revelry is not over yet. Two post-wedding functions are scheduled - a family affair at Pataudi Palace and a reception in Delhi.

After the mehendi ceremony, Saif Ali Khan held a dinner for near and dear ones.

The celebrations took place at Hotel Taj Mahal Palace in Colaba, Mumbai, and Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, Karisma Kapoor and Reema Jain were clicked by the shutterbugs.

Both Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor looked amazing; while the Nawab wore a tuxedo, Bebo’s chunky glittery earrings caught our attention! Not to mention, Soha Ali Khan and Kunal Kapoor too looked great together!

Saifeena's sangeet

Bollywood couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor's pre-wedding party on Sunday at Bebo's Bandra residence was a private affair with the terrace venue covered to prevent media getting a peek. Many Bollywood celebrities were spotted at the party including Neetu Singh, Babita, Sanjay

Kapoor, Manish Malhotra, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu among others. While a source says it's a sangeet ceremony, designer Manish Malhotra said: "Its just a fun party." Kareena was wearing a traditional yellow-golden lehenga.

The marriage, to be reportedly be held on Tuesday, is planned as a quiet affair with only immediate family
members from both sides being present.

Saifeena's engagement

Saifeena's engagement

Engagement of Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor held on February 10, 2012. he duo has been the toast of the B-Town grapevine ever since they became a couple four years ago. Saif, 41, and Kareena, 31, had announced their plans to get married soon after the release of Saif's upcoming ambitious production Agent Vinod, co-starring his bride-to-be. The film releases on March 23. Incidentally, Kareena's new rom-com Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu will release on February 10.

"Saif and Kareena are serious about their marriage. They have been in love for quite some time and both of them think this is the right time to tie the knot. However, both of them have important films lined up. The engagement and wedding will have to be balanced with the work load," a source close to the actress said.

Kareena, who is currently in London with her sister Karisma, will be promoting her new film even as she prepares for the engagement. Saif, too, has been working hard over the past year or so to get his megabudget spy thriller Agent Vinod ready for release.

Kareena is likely to wear a Vikram Phadnis creation at the engagement. The venue is yet to be decided and both the families have reportedly planned a private ring ceremony to be attended only by close friends and relatives. Both the engagement and the subsequent wedding will be low-key affairs as Saif's father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi passed away only a few months ago.

Saifeena may throw a party for industry colleagues a few days after the engagement, either at a Mumbai hotspot or at Saif's residence, a source added. Reports of a February 10 engagement have come as a surprise for many, considering Saifeena have been shying away from specifically answering questions about settling down. During the recent unveiling of the first look of Agent Vinod, Saif skirted the topic saying: "I would like to talk about my film at this event and not about my engagement or marriage."

While sources close to the actors said they picked February 10 for the engagement because of the date's proximity to Valentine's Day, others have indicated that the news could be aimed at promoting Ek Main Aur
Ekk Tu.

"Everyone is waiting eagerly for the Saif-Kareena wedding. However, there was no hint so far of an engagement at such a short notice. The Valentine's Day angle cannot be glossed over but what is worth noting is that Kareena also has a romantic comedy releasing in the same week," a trade insider, not wishing to be named, said. Kareena has Talaash and Heroine lined up and Saif's other big films are Race 2 and Cocktail.

Kareena Kapoor to change name after marriage

Kareena Kapoor to change name after marriage

Kareena Kapoor has revealed she will change her name after marriage. The actress is marrying long-term boyfriend Saif Ali Khan in October, after postponing the date for several months.

She told The Times of India: "Saif doesn't want me to change anything about myself, including my name, after
marriage. Post-marriage I will be Kareena Kapoor Khan. "That means I have the privilege of having two of the most powerful surnames in Bollywood attached to my name."

Kapoor was reportedly forced to drop out of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Romeo and Juliet update because the
filmmaker thought a married woman would be unconvincing as Juliet.

In July, the 31-year-old star denied that her marriage to Khan will affect her acting ambitions. She said: "I think I will be like Zohra Sehgal who would be working till 90 - so tough luck. I am not going
to give my place to anyone."

Saif is not that romantic

Saif is not that romantic

Kareena Kapoor has revealed details of Saif Ali Khan's marriage proposal. In an interview with Hello! India, the actress explained how the couple first became properly acquainted. "We were in Ladakh to shoot Tashan. I had just broken up with Shahid Kapoor. Even though I had met Saif socially, we hadn't spoken much. When I spotted him near the hotel pool, he was tanning on a lounge chair, clad in just jeans. I told my friend, 'Oh my God… he's so hot!'

"After our first shot, we chatted and he made me laugh a lot. I hope it always stays that way. Today, we are
best friends. I hope marriage only adds to what we share." The actress, who starred with Khan in Agent Vinod, revealed that he never really declared his affections
verbally and didn't formally propose.

"Actually, he never really said it… he isn't that romantic. We'd been dating for a couple of months, and he said, 'Look… I'm not 25 years old, you know. I can't keep dropping you home every night'. "So, he came and met my mother and told her, 'She's my woman, I want to spend the rest of my life with her. We want to live together'. My mum was pretty cool about it. I just got my stuff together and that was it. No fuss."

Kareena Kapoor's wedding clothes prepared

Kareena Kapoor's wedding clothes prepared

With reports that the wedding celebrations will commence from October 16, designer Manisha Malhotra has been carrying out final fittings for the bride-to-be's family, IANS reports. Speaking on Twitter, Malhotra said:  "This morning :fittings with karisma for her clothes for kareenas wedding." Kareena Kapoor is expected to wear her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore's wedding dress, which has been modified to make it more contemporary. Malhotra said that the clothes for Kareena's wedding trousseau will be minimalistic, reflecting the actress's personal style.

The Pataudi wedding is expected to be a lavish event with celebrations taking place over several days. A source told the Mumbai Mirror: "They have booked the hotel from October 13 to 17 for the various unctions
that are to be held before their wedding day. A Gurgaon hotel has already been booked. They have also arranged to land on a helipad nearby."

Talking about her marriage plans, the Heroine star recently said: "Post-marriage I will be Kareena Kapoor Khan. That means I have the privilege of having two of the most powerful surnames in Bollywood attached to my name."

Kareena's secret wedding

Kareena's secret wedding

Bebo begum’s dearest daddy Randhir Kapoor reveals all about the most-talked-about marriage in Bollywood. Even as Bollywood’s ‘it’ couple Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor gear to make their relationship official, one would expect a lot of chaos and commotion in the Kapoor and the Pataudi khandaans. But that’s not exactly the scene in the famous households. To-be begum Bebo’s father Randhir Kapoor recently revealed, “There is not much planning, as it is going to be a quiet wedding.”

If you recollect, long ago we had speculated – later it was reported by a tabloid – that the gorgeous couple could opt for a registered marriage. Randhir Kapoor confirmed our guesswork and added that the bride and groom’s family members and close friends will be the only witnesses on the joyous occasion. The D-day will be followed by a lavish reception party held by Saif’s mother Sharmila Tagore in Delhi.

Isn’t it surprising? We always thought that Bebo wanted a big fat filmi wedding, like the one her sister Karisma Kapoor had. In fact, the Heroine’s dad certainly wanted a big bash to celebrate his daughter’s happiness. “I would personally like to say sorry to those who have not been invited to the wedding,” Randhir
at first apologised for the private wedding, and added, “If I had my way, I would’ve had a big bash and invited the whole world. But kids of today are different and have their own mindset.”

And we definitely think Saifeena has very fixed ways of thinking. Remember that in an interview Sharmila Tagore had said that she was strictly instructed by Saif not to talk to the media about his wedding to Bebo and dear Mommy had to oblige? Let’s hope now Kareena’s dad won’t be at the receiving end of her temper for giving out shaadi details.

Celebrity fashion designer Manish Malhotra, who is designing Kareena Kapoor's wedding trousseau, says the marriage ceremony is like a family affair to him. Without divulging much details about the attire and the wedding, Manish said it has got an Indian appeal to it.

"It's a wedding which is very close to my heart. It's almost like a family wedding and there are lot of preparation going on for it. It's unfair to speak about it tonight. It's all very Indian," Manish said at the ongoing Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013.

He showcased his latest Mijwan collection with actress Parineeti Chopra as the showstopper. She sashayed down the ramp in a blue and orange lehenga teamed with a deep-cut choli. The collection comprised of lehengas and anarkalis of 60s style and had Chikankari embroidery by girls from
Mijwan, who are supported by veteran actress Shabana Azmi's Mijwan Welfare Society (MWS).

"This show is all about showing the craft of Mijwan women. The whole purpose was to highlight the good cause through fashion week. We recently did a show in Mumbai where a lot of the actors walked for the cause. Fashion week is all about style and trends but sometimes it is good to see the craft that is happening in our villages," Manish said.

Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor, born 25 February 1981, is an Indian actor who appears in Bollywood films. He is also a traineddancer.

Starting off his career by working in music videos and advertisements, Kapoor made his Bollywood debut as a background dancer in Subhash Ghai's Taal (1999). Four years later, he made his acting debut in Ishq Vishk (2003) and won a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for his performance. Following through with films like Fida (2004) and Shikhar (2005), he had his first major commercial success with Sooraj R. Barjatya's Vivah (2006), his biggest commercial success, and followed it up with Jab We Met (2007) and Kaminey (2009), both of which earned him Best Actor nominations at the Filmfare ceremony.

Early life

Kapoor was born to actor Pankaj Kapoor and actor/classical dancer Neelima Azeem on 25 February 1981. Kapoor's parents divorced when he was 3. After the divorce, he lived with his mother and maternal grandparents in Junaghad. He shared a good relationship with his father and stepmother Supriya Pathak. As far as his religiousaffiliation is concerned, Kapoor has stated in an interview that while his father is a Punjabi and his mother is a Muslim, both his parents have taught him that he "should look at all religions without hatred and have compassion for every human being whatever his religion may be," saying that he believes that "there is one God up above."

As a child, he studied in Rajhans Vidyalaya, Mumbai. He has three half siblings: a sister named Sanah and brothers named Ruhaan and Ishaan Khattar. Ishaan acted with him in the movie Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi (2005). His maternal grandfather was Anwar Azeem, a noted Marxist journalist and author from Bihar. His great great grandfather was the film director, screenwriter, Urdu novelist and journalist Khwaja Ahmad Abbas more popularly known as K. A. Abbas. His mother Neelima is the daughter of Anwar Azeem, one of the greatest Urdu writers. K.A. Abbas in turn was the grandson of Hali, the chief protégé of Urdu poet, Ghalib.

Early career, until 2005

Before starting off his career as an actor, Kapoor worked in several music videos and ads, including the Pepsi commercial with Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji post Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and the music video Aankhon Me Tera Hi Chehra by the Aryans along with Hrishitaa Bhatt. While doing so, he decided to join the Shiamak Davar Institute for the Performing Arts (SDIPA), where he was later seen in Subhash Ghai's film Taal (1999) as a background dancer in the song "Kahin Aag Lage Lag Jawe" along with actress Aishwarya Rai.

In 2003, Kapoor played his first leading role as Rajiv Mathur, a carefree young man in Ken Ghosh's moderately successful love story Ishq Vishk. Appearing opposite Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasurywala, the
film was well received by audiences and Kapoor's performance earned him a Filmfare Best Male Debut Award. Film critic Taran Adarsh from indiaFM wrote, "Shahid Kapoor is an actor to watch. He has all the qualities to hit the top slot. Not only is he good looking, but he is an amazing performer as well. Very original as a performer, the youngster has handled the dramatic and emotional moments with flourish. He is an exceptional dancer as well. All he needs to do is pick and choose his forthcoming assignments with care, so that the journey to the top slot is minus hiccups."

The following year, Kapoor joined once again with director Ken Ghosh in the thriller Fida, where he co-starred alongside Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan. The film failed to do well at the box office, yet Kapoor's performance was praised. The Tribune concluded, "Shahid Kapoor shines in his role. He looks fresh. As an impulsive emotional and innocent guy, who is sucked into crime because of these very qualities, he manages to evoke your sympathies." He then appeared in the romantic comedy Dil Maange More opposite Soha Ali Khan, Tulip Joshi, and Ayesha Takia. His performance opened to mixed reviews. Rediff.com wrote that "Shahid tends to imitate Shahrukh Khan a lot. He does it well in some scenes, overdoes it in others" Featuring in three more films in 2005, success continued to elude Kapoor. However, his performance as Jaidev Vardhan, a man who is sucked into the world of money and greed in John M. Matthan's drama Shikhar was critically acclaimed, earning Kapoor his first Star Screen Award for Best Actor nomination. According to IndiaFM, "Shahid Kapoor is only improving with every film. He matches up to Ajay in almost all
sequences."

Breakthrough, 2006–present

In 2006, Kapoor starred in 36 China Town. Revolving around the story of seven individuals and a murder, the film became a moderate success despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. Shortly after the release of
the film, Kapoor's second release of the year, Priyadarshan's comedy Chup Chup Ke, followed. The film became a moderate success at the box office.

Kapoor's last release of 2006 was Sooraj R. Barjatya's romantic drama Vivah, a film depicting the journey of two individuals from engagement to marriage. Co-starring alongside Amrita Rao, the film was received favourably by most critics and became one of the highest grossing films of the year as well as Kapoor's second biggest commercial success to date. Kapoor's performance earned his second consecutive nomination for Best Actor at the Star Screen Awards. Taran Adarsh wrote, "Shahid Kapoor performs like never before. If he was super-cool in Ishq Vishk and showed flashes of brilliance in Fida, you've to watch him in Vivah to see his growth as a tremendous actor. He is exceptional in emotional sequences."

During the summer of 2006, Kapoor embarked on his first world tour, the Rockstars Concert, along with Bollywood stars, Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, John Abraham, Esha Deol, Mallika Sherawat and Zayed Khan.

In 2007, Kapoor appeared in two movies. His first release was Ahmed Khan's Fool and Final. The film received negative reviews and failed to do well at the box office; Kapoor's performance in the film did notreceive positive reviews. His next release, Imtiaz Ali's comedy-romance Jab We Met, opposite Kareena Kapoor, became one of the biggest hits of the year. The film tells the story of two people with two very different personalities meeting each other on a train and how they fall in love eventually. Kapoor portrayed the character of Aditya Kashyap, a dejected young industrialist full of angst and despair. The film was well-received by critics and Kapoor's performance earned him several nominations for Best Actor at a number of award ceremonies, including Filmfare. Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN noted, "Despite the risk of being overshadowed by Kareena, his co-star in the film, Shahid Kapur leaves an indelible impression with a performance that is understated and mature, and indeed the perfect foil to Kareena's boisterousness." Kapoor then appeared in the Aziz Mirza-directed film, Kismat Konnection (2008), opposite Vidya Balan. Upon release, the film under-performed at the box office.

In 2009, Kapoor portrayed the dual role of twins Charlie and Guddu in the caper thriller, Kaminey. Directed
by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film was a critical and commercial success and received mostly positive reviews. Kapoor's performance was also critically acclaimed. Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN wrote, "Shahid Kapur rises to the challenge of creating two entirely different characters out of Charlie and Guddu, and delivers a credible performance as each. Breaking out of his chocolate-boy image, he gives evidence of his potential when trusted with well-written roles." Later in the year, Kapoor appeared alongside Rani Mukerji in Anurag Singh's romantic comedy Dil Bole Hadippa!, which failed to do well at the Indian box office.

In 2010, Kapoor appeared in Ken Ghosh's film Chance Pe Dance opposite Genelia D'Souza, in which he portrayedthe role of a struggling Bollywood actor. The movie received poor review from critics, but Kapoor's performance was well received. He then starred in Ahmed Khan's Paathshala in a extended cameo alongside Ayesha Takia and Nana Patekar. This was then followed by Yash Raj Films Badmaash Company which was released on 7 May 2010 and opened mixed to positive reviews and was an above average success at the box office and his performance in the film was received well too. His last release of the year was the long delayed Satish Kaushik's Milenge Milenge.

In 2011, Kapoor appeared opposite Sonam Kapoor in Mausam (2011), a movie directed and written by Pankaj Kapoor. The film received mixed to positive response from critics, however his performance was generally well received. Critic Taran Adarsh wrote, "Shahid gives his all to this role, submitting himself to his director-father to mould him the way he chooses to. It won't be erroneous to state that Shahid surpasses all his previous performances, including the one in Kaminey, with this film. The film also marks the coming of age of this actor."

In June 2012, Kapoor appeared in Kunal Kohli's Teri Meri Kahaani. The film was released on June 22, 2012, to mixed to positive reviews from top critics. However, Kapoor's performance was generally well received. Taran Adarsh of BollywoodHungama gave a positve review to Kapoor's performance stating, "Not many actors get the opportunity to portray three diverse roles in a single movie. But Shahid carries each of those parts with refinement, besides looking debonair in each character. There is no quizzing his performing abilities either. He pulls the act with effortlessness and panache. As a matter of fact, whenever Shahid has attempted something diverse, the results have been luminous. From playing a musician in Bollywood to a compulsive flirt in Punjab to the unflustered and trendy youngster settled in U.K., Shahid does an exceptional job. Among the three characters, his take as Javed is sure to win him accolades." Sonia Chopra of Sify.com noted, "Shahid Kapoor is so good in the film, he’s sure to increase his fan-following several fold. He’s excellent in each of the stories, and one can imagine viewers debating on where he was the best." Madhureeta Mukherjee of Times Of India also gave a positve review and said, "Shahid Kapoor is best as the badnaam shayar Javed. He uses his boyish charm effectively, dancing like the wind (in Uff and Humse Pyar Karle Tu), and cheekily winning women in every janam. Shahid seduces the audience with his style and shayari, sparking life into this cliche-riddled kahaani." However, despite the positive critical acclaim, the film failed to do well at the Indian box office, although was a moderate success in the overseas markets.

As of August 2012, Kapoor is also set to start filming for Bejoy Nambiar's next film. It has also been confirmed that Kapoor will feature in Prabhu Deva's next film, Namak, opposite Katrina Kaif, which is expected to go on floors in early 2013 and will release later that year. Kapoor has also signed a Bollywood masala entertainer, tentatively titled Phata Poster Nikla Hero opposite Ileana D'Cruz. The film, to be directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Ramesh Taurani's Tips Music Films. It is expected to go on floors from November and will release next year.

Personal life

Kapoor identifies himself as a vegetarian. While filming Fida (2004), he began dating Kareena Kapoor. They separated during the filming of Jab We Met (2007). According to him, they remained on good terms, with him saying, "I wish her all the happiness in the world. I have great respect for her. She is a wonderful girl."

Saif Ali Khan is of Pashtun ancestry through the Nawabs of Pataudi lineage from his father's side and of Hindu Bengali Tagore ancestry from his mother's side. His paternal grandfather, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, was the Nawab of Pataudi as well as an accomplished cricketer who played for England and then for India as the captain of the team. His paternal grandmother was Sajida Sultan, Begum of Bhopal and his great-uncle was Pakistani general Nawabzada Sher Ali Khan Pataudi. His father was Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, a former captain of the Indian cricket team and the ninth Nawab of Pataudi until the abolition of titles by India in 1971. Following the death of his father, Saif Ali Khan was proclaimed the Nawab of Pataudi by the villagers of Pataudi State in deference to tradition, although the title carries no official or legal significance.

Khan has two sisters, Saba Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan. Khan's mother is Sharmila Tagore, a Bengali Indian film actress and a member of Bengal's Tagore family. She is also the head of the Indian film censorship board and the grand-niece of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore converted to Islam from Hinduism after her marriage to Khan's father, and changed her name to Begum Ayesha Sultana. Khan spent his childhood in a Muslim atmosphere, reading the Quran, with his grandmother Sajida Sultan, Begum of Bhopal, being the centre of his religious education. Khan says that "Religion played a major role in my upbringing." Khan also states that his family is "cool or rather massively open–minded about religious matters." For example, he acknowledges that his daughter is born into a Muslim family, however he states that he will not decide her religion for her.

Khan initially studied at the Lawrence School, Sanawar and later attended Lockers Park School in Hertfordshire. He then followed in his father's footsteps by attending Winchester College, an independent school for boys in the UK. Khan can speak his native languages of Hindi and Bengali fluently, as well as English.

Early work, until 2000

In 1993, he won the Filmfare Best Male Debut Award for Aashiq Awara. His breakthrough role came in 1994 with Yeh Dillagi starring opposite Akshay Kumar and Kajol which was his first major hit. Khan went on to star in many films but they failed at the box office. He only had success with multi-starrer hits like Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994), Imtihaan (1995), Kachche Dhaage (1999) and Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999). After some box office failures he had a hit with the film Kya Kehna (2000).

Turning point, 2001–03

His acting career, more or less, went through a relative slump until 2001, when he was cast in Farhan Akhtar's National Film Award-winning Dil Chahta Hai, co-starring Aamir Khan and Akshaye Khanna. Depicting the contemporary routine life of Indian affluent youth, it is set in modern-day urban Mumbai and focuses on a major period of transition in the lives of three young friends. Despite receiving a positive critical reception, it was only a moderate box office success in India; it performed well in the big cities but failed in the rural areas, which was attributed by critics to the urban-oriented lifestyle depicted in the movie. He received much acclaim for his role as Sameer with critic Taran Adarsh calling it his career-best performance.

He has since had many box office successes, starting with Nikhil Advani's drama Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), co-starring alongside Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta. The film, set in New York, starred Saif as Rohit, Zinta's best friend, who later realises that he loves her. The film was the second top-grossing film of the year, and Khan's performance was praised by critics. He won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award, as well as other awards in that category in other award ceremonies.

Solo success and critical acclaim, 2004–08

To date, Khan's films have often featured him as the supporting cast, though following the success of Dil Chahta Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho, producers began signing him on for the main lead. In early 2004, Khan was approached by Sriram Raghavan to star as the globe-trotting bachelor, Karan Singh Rathod, in his directorial debut, Ek Hasina Thi. The film tells the story of a young woman (played by Urmila Matondkar) who meets with Khan's character, and is subsequently arrested for having links with the underworld. When Khan was initially offered the project, he was unable to do it due to his busy schedule. However, when the director approached him several months later, he agreed to do the film. Upon release, the film was critically embraced, with Khan's performing earning praise. The Deccan Herald reported, "From suave loverboy to self-serving skunk, he (Khan) moves with such brilliance that he leaves you breathless [...] He holds his own in a movie that is completely Urmila's." For his performance, Khan received nominations at the Star Screen, Zee Cine and IIFA ceremonies.

He followed it with the leading role in Kunal Kohli's romantic comedy Hum Tum. Featured opposite Rani Mukerji, the film follows the encounters of the two main characters until they, after several years and various meetings, become friends and finally fall in love. The film was received favourably by critics and became one of the year's most successful films, with a domestic box office of 210 million (US$3.97 million). Khan played the role of Karan Kapoor, a young cartoonist and womaniser whose relationship with Rhea Prakash (played by Mukerji) changes his perception of women and life. Rediff.com wrote about his performance: "Saif reprises his urbane self from Dil Chahta Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho, peppering it with occasional fits of introspection and angst, and marking himself as an actor whose time has come." He won the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role and was conferred the coveted National Film Award for Best Actor in 2005 among much controversy. It marked the beginning of his work with Yash Raj Films, one of the largest production houses in Bollywood.

In 2005, Khan appeared in two movies. His first release was Pradeep Sarkar's Parineeta (2005), an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1914 Bengali novella by the same name. Prior to being cast, the film's producer, Vidhu Vinod Chopra was initially reluctant in casting Khan as the male protagonist because he felt that "I could not manage it". After much deliberation, Chopra was persuaded by Sarkar who felt that Khan was perfect for the role. The film garnered critical acclaim upon release and Khan's portrayal of Shekhar Rai earned him nominations for Best Actor at a number of award ceremonies. Derek Elley from Variety wrote, "Khan, who has gradually been developing away from light comedy, again shows smarts as a substantial actor." His next release was Siddharth Anand's comedy-drama Salaam Namaste opposite Preity Zinta. Produced by Yash Raj Films, it was the first Indian feature to be filmed entirely in Australia and went on to become the year's highest-grossing Bollywood production outside of India, earning 570 million (US$10.77 million) internationally. Khan played the role of the egotistic, laid-back chef, Nikhil Arora. According to Khalid Mohamed, "Salaam Namaste is unthinkable without Saif Ali Khan. He rescues several untidily written scenes with his neat wit and that flustered 'how-did-I-get-into-this-soup?' facial expression."

He next played the protagonist in the English language art film, Being Cyrus (2006), co-starring alongside Naseeruddin Shah and Dimple Kapadia. Directed by debutant Homi Adajania, the psychological drama revolves around a dysfunctional Parsi family with who Khan's character moves into. The film received predominantly positive reviews, and Khan was particularly praised. Later in the year, he portrayed the character of Iago in Omkara, the Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film is a tragedy of sexual jealousy set against the backdrop of the political system in Uttar Pradesh. The film premiered at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and was also selected for screening at the Cairo International Film Festival. Omkara was embraced by critics and Khan went on to receive major acclaim earning the awards for Best Actor in a Negative Role at the Filmfare, Star Screen, Zee Cine and IIFA ceremonies; his performance was later included in the 2010 issue of the "Top 80 Iconic Performances" by Filmfare. Variety described his performance as "powerhouse" and further wrote, "It is Khan's movie through and through, in a performance of rugged, contained malevolence which trades on his previous screen persona as a likable best friend as well as his stint as the manipulative outsider in Being Cyrus. It is smart casting, superbly realized."

In 2007, Khan collaborated once again with producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra in the epic drama Eklavya: The Royal Guard, alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sharmila Tagore and Vidya Balan. Set in the state of Rajasthan during the early years of Indian independence, the movie revolves around a jealous and ungrateful ruler who will not let his wife die in peace because she is uttering the name of Eklavya. Although the film did not succeed at the box office, it was chosen as India's official entry to the Oscars. The Full Hyderabad described Khan's performance of Harshwardhan as "sombre and understated," played with a "brooding and contemplative sensibility." He next appeared in the action comedy Nehlle Pe Dehlla, a production that had been delayed since 2001. The film garnered negative reviews and poor box office returns. Khan's role was small, and was not well received. His final release of the year was the family drama, Ta Ra Rum Pum. Directed by Siddharth Anand, it went on to become an economic success at the box office, earning 646 million (US$12.21 million) internationally.

Khan received further success in 2008, starring in the Abbas-Mustan thriller Race with an ensemble cast including Anil Kapoor, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy. The feature was loosely adapted from the 1998 American film Goodbye Lover, and became one of the biggest box office hits in India, earning 617 million (US$11.66 million) and grossed over 200 million (US$3.78 million) abroad. Critic Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN wrote, "Of the cast, Saif Ali Khan stands out as the chap with the least dialogue but the one who makes the best impression." This was followed by three projects produced by Yash Raj Films: Tashan, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Roadside Romeo, all of which were not successful.

Producer and other works, 2009–present

2009 saw Khan branch out into film producing when he set up his own production company, Illuminati Films, along with Dinesh Vijan. The company's first release was marked by the romantic comedy Love Aaj Kal. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film portrays the feeling of pure love which never changes over time, although the perspective of realizing one's soulmate has changed. It received mostly positive reviews by critics and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. For his portrayal of Jai Vardhan Singh and the younger Veer Singh, Khan went on to receive several Best Actor nominations at a number of award ceremonies, including Filmfare. A review in The Economic Times described his performance as "refreshing natural" and "outstanding". He then starred in the dramatic thriller Kurbaan, alongside Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi. Produced by Dharma Productions, the film marked the directorial debut of Rensil D'Silva and featured Khan in the role of a terrorist. Upon release, Kurbaan was received favourably by critics and Khan's performance was critically acclaimed. Critic Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama wrote: "Saif is extraordinary in a role that only proves his versatility once again. If he won your heart with a winning performance in Love Aaj Kal a few months ago, you need to watch this supremely talented actor underplay his part so beautifully in Kurbaan.

In 2011, he appeared in Prakash Jha's multi-starrer drama Aarakshan. Set in the city of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, the film deals with the policy of caste-based reservations in government jobs and educational institutions. Khan portrayed the character of Deepak Kumar, a rebellious student who joins the mafia. To prepare for the role, Khan was required to take acting workshops along with the rest of the cast. Prior to its release, the film was banned from releasing in select cities across India due to its controversial subject. While the film received a mixed critical reaction, his performance was generally well received. The following year, Khan collaborated once again with director Sriram Raghavan, as the protagonist in the action thriller Agent Vinod. The film, which was produced under his own banner, opened to mixed reviews and eventually under-performed at the box office.

By May 2012, Khan completed working on Cocktail, a romantic comedy directed by Homi Adjania. Co-starring alongside Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty. He is currently filming for the sequel to his 2008 release, Race.

Personal life

Khan married actress Amrita Singh in October 1991. After thirteen years of marriage and two children (son Ibrahim Ali Khan and daughter Sara Ali Khan), the couple divorced in 2004. The children live with their mother.

He then dated Rosa Catalano a Swiss model born in Italy, whom he met in Kenya, for three years. Catalano later revealed that he had not told her about his earlier marriage and children, and that she learnt about them only after she came to India. They were later said to be considering marriage, but then broke off.

On 18 February 2007, Khan was hospitalised at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai due to experiencing chest pain while rehearsing for his performance at the Stardust Awards, to be held that night. After hospitalization, he stated he would quit smoking.

Khan has been dating actress Kareena Kapoor since October 2007. In October 2009 he publicly spoke of his relationship with Kapoor and the prospect of marriage stating, that in his opinion people said that marriage does not affect one's career but in fact it does and that today the whole definition of marriage has changed. He said, that he and Kareena were so well connected, so close that marriage is just a stamp of validation for the society.

On 22 September 2011 Khan's father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi passed away, which led Saif to formally assume the title of 10th Nawab of Pataudi. Although the title has no legal or official status after 1971, Saif assumed the title in order to please the sentiments of the villagers. The 'pagri' ceremony was even attended by the incumbent Chief Minister of Haryana.

Other work

In 2005, along with other Bollywood stars, Khan performed at the HELP! Telethon Concert to help raise money for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.

Khan took part in two major world tours. He was part of a troupe that included Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal and Priyanka Chopra, which went on the Temptations 2004 world tour. Two years later, he toured again, participating and performing in the Heat 2006 concert around the world, along with Akshay Kumar, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen and Celina Jaitley.

In 2006, Khan appeared along with various other Bollywood actors at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture along with Rani Mukerji, and Aishwarya Rai on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, held in Delhi.

Controversies

In 1998, Khan was charged with poaching two blackbucks in Kankani during the filming of Hum Saath Saath Hain along with co-stars Salman Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam. The charges were dropped soon after Salman Khan was acquitted.

In 2008, Khan was also involved in assaulting a photographer, Pawan Sharma, while filming Love Aaj Kal at Patiala railway station.

In 2012, Khan was dining with his friends, including Kareena Kapoor and Amrita Arora, at the Wasabi restaurant in Taj, Mumbai and making a din and was repeatedly requested by the restaurant management to be quieter. Khan then allegedly assaulted the complainants, Iqbal Sharma, a businessman, who suffered a fractured nose, and an elderly man. Khan was arrested under article 325 of the Indian Penal Code, and released on bail on a surety of 3,000 (US$56.7) by the Mumbai Police. Khan claimed it was an act of self-defence and filed a case leveling counter allegations. However, the police refused to register Saif's case since he could not produce any evidence.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating him in an alleged Hawala transactions case. The ED suspects that Saif Ali Khan illegally purchased a high-end car in 2004 through Hawala system allegedly in violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
